How Building A Brand On Morals Signifies Greed.

Can Greed be a good thing?

Being ethical is long term greedy - Naval

When I first came across this quote by Naval, I was puzzled and struggled to grasp the meaning of it.

I am an ardent follower of Naval and I have listened to every episode on his podcast, this particular one on greed and ethics was something that was actually true when looked at from his perspective.

Whenever someone is know to be moral and honest, calling such person greedy would no doubt be met with a lot of objections and even harsh words.

However the more I listened, the more I understood what Naval was talking about.

If you cut fair deals, you will get paid in the long run

In the business world, honest people are scarce and when deals are about to occur, it mostly takes things like a contract to get people to trust each other.

And even when Trust is built on contracts, some people end up not getting a fair deal.

When it comes to good deals, the people who chose to cut them might seem generally naive in the short term, but they are taking actions that has massive compound Interest.

People who are aggressive when it comes to extracting as much stake at they can from any deal despite the consequences to the other party might seem to be benefitting, but that is only on the short term.

With time, people like that would be avoided when new deals are about to be made, and the deals would go to people who have a reputation for being Fair.

Wisdom and judgement is mostly about knowing the long term consequences of your action, something that might seem okay or normal to you today, might rob you of future opportunities.

So while “Greed” might seem like a bad word. You can build the “Right” kind of greed by being morally upright.

Being moral also means that you would have a calm mind, you won’t have to keep track of lies that you have told. The truth will always set you free.

Attitude beats Skill

A similar principle like this is the relationship that exists between attitude and skill.

If you are very skilled but have a bad attitude people won’t to work with you. That bad attitude would cast a shadow on any skill that you have.

Some less skilled than you but have a better attitude would get more opportunities than you.

So as you build your brand in both the business and skill world. Make sure that you are building your brand with the future in view.

Knowing the long term consequences of your actions is the key to being relevant in the long term.
