How To Eliminate Good Distractions

Not all are Bad

Progress is deciding what to stop doing - Jack Butcher

There are a lot of things that comes at us daily that impacts what we are meant to be doing.

And for as long as I can remember, a lot of people have been giving advice on how anyone can eliminate distractions.

Lots of books and media has popped up around this topic.

Heck, I have two guides that talks on how anyone can create effective daily routines and also do activities that drives growth and income.

But, there seem to be one thing that many of these people preaching productivity seems to miss out.

Not all distractions are bad.

There are things that wrestle for your attention that you can’t classify as bad.

They are always fit into your goals and ambitions and you always know deep down that they are things that you need to work on.

The question now is, why are those things a distraction and what needs to be done.

My friend Arinze has a saying that he uses from time to time.

Knowledge is a curse

And while this saying can be interpreted in various ways.

I will stick the one that highlights the message that I am trying to pass across in this post.

As young person, there are a lot of things that you can potentially be doing with your time.

And if you are someone that is widely read, you would be exposed to so much things that you could be potentially doing.

And even when you narrow it down to a particular niche or sector, the possibilities are still numerous.

I am saying this from personal experience.

I am someone that has a deep understanding of what needs to be built in my field.

And despite the fact that I know how lack of focus and distractions could stagnate me, I am still stuck with good distractions after eliminating the bad ones.

First of all, what is a good distraction..

A good distraction is something that you know that you should do/ can do.

So if it checks all the boxes, why is it a distraction?, you may ask.

It is a distraction because it is not time for it yet.

It’s always important that you break your journey into steps so that you would be able to achieve it much faster.

There are two problems that people face when it comes to good distractions.

  • Knowing what to do now.

  • Knowing when to partner or hire.

What to do now

I have talked with people who have a big dream or vision and they mostly have one problem.

How To Start

What To Start

When To Start

And these three problems or questions are tied to one central problem.

An unwillingness to start small

If you are among the people who are always in a hurry to bear the CEO title, then good distractions would finish you.

Every business right now can be built leveraging the Internet, so I would focus on building from there.

Some weeks back on my WhatsApp status, I talked about how capital shouldn’t be a problem for anyone building a business in this current age.

As long as you have a smartphone and Internet connection, you already have more than enough resources.

You can always build an audience on any platform and get your first batch of customers/funding from them.

If you lack the most Important structure for a business, i.e a customer base, don’t spend all your time acquiring important knowledge.

This endless knowledge acquisition without action taking is what has been keeping you grounded.

You are always reading or taking a course on how to do this or that thing that would contribute to the success of what you are doing.

Building a website, Building a team, registering the business etc.

Are all these things good and important. Yes

But ask yourself.

Do I really need to do all these things now?

If you build a website for your business. How many people would visit it daily?

If you build a team, what are the things that you would be working on?

Do you really need to wait to get money to register your business before you start?

You need to stop majoring on minor things and get what drives utility for any structure that you would be building.

The most important thing for those starting is building an audience of people that would want what you are offering.

And you don’t need a website for it. You just need to choose one social media platform where lots of people spend their time and start from there.

Focus all your attention on learning and doing what it takes to serve and grow that audience.

Any other good ideas that you get should be documented and saved for when it really needs to be done.

Documenting ideas have helped me a lot because it enables me save things until the time they really need to get done.

Once you build an audience and figure out how to monetize it, you would slowly begin to set up structures that would enable your business grow.

You would achieve a lot when you stick to doing first things first and also one thing at a time.

When To Partner or hire.

There will come a time when you will need to partner with others to build what you are building.

The importance of doing first things first and working with clarity is because it would help you know what to look for in a partner.

Don’t make the mistake of going into unnecessary partnerships with people.

If you not, you will end up partnering with someone who brings no real value to the table.

Once you have the first step of laying the foundation and building a community of people who want what you are offering, when the times for expansion comes, you would know what you need.

Running a business, especially online, involves being good in more than one thing.

However, there are things that would be better achieved via partnership or hiring someone to do it.

Insisting on learning how to do those things can slow you down, and you would end up with a good distraction.

So be willing to hire or partner when it is time to scale.

These two things would help you delegate and free you up to focus more on the things that you are really good at.

Whether you are building a product or service based business, there are a lot of things that goes into it.
